Dicentra formosa

Dicentra formosa (Bleeding Heart)

Rhizomatous spreading perennial grows 1.5 feet tall by 2 feet wide. Usually found in moist wooded areas. Pink-purple flowers bloom mid spring to early summer above blue-green fern like foliage. Prefers shade to part shade although can be grown in full sun as well.

Dodecatheon Hendersonii

Dodecatheon hendersonii (Broad-Leaved Shooting Star)

Western North American native rosette forming perennial grows 12 to 18 inches tall in sun, part shade or shade. Fuchsia colored flowers, that some say resemble a bird's beak, bloom April to May. Plant goes dormant during summer months.

Eriophyllum lanatum (Oregon Sunshine)

Native to Oregon and Washington, it is found in dry areas and prefers full sun. Grows between 6 to 12 inches tall and forms a dense, wooly mat of fragrant, silver foliage. Masses of 1 inch golden daisies bloom from early May to late June. This plant attract bees and butterflies.

This plant has thin, erect stems growing from a basal rosette. Prefers full to part sun and a well-drained site. Fragrant bright yellow-orange flowers bloom May to June and attract butterflies. Grows 12 to 16 inches tall.

Erythronium oregonum (Fawn Lily)

This native lily can be found from British Columbia to Oregon and grows just 6 to 14 inches tall by 4 inches wide. It prefers dappled shade to part shade and rich, well-drained soil. Plant in drifts in a woodland setting for a beautiful display. Attractive green leaves with brown/maroon mottling and creamy white flowers that bloom in April.

Gaillardia aristata

Gaillardia aristata (Common Blanket Flower)

Drought tolerant, clump forming native perennial wild flower is great for sunny spots with well-drained soil. Prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade. It is native to open hot plains and prairies. Grows 2 to 3 feet tall by 18 to 24 inches wide. Showy yellow daisy-like flowers with red-orange centers bloom summer to fall. Works great in butterfly gardens and for cut flowers.

Garrya eliptica (Silk Tassel)

Western North American native bushy, low maintenance evergreen shrub. Grows 10 to 12 feet tall. Has showy catkins (or tassels), which appear in winter and spring and bloom on previous years new growth. Good for growing up walls or in shrub borders. Grows in sun or part shade and tolerates coastal exposure.

Gaultheria shallon

Gaultheria shallon (Salal)

Evergreen groundcover grows 1 to 2 feet tall in full sun, 4 to 10 feet tall in shade, by 5 feet wide. Hummingbirds are attracted to the loose clusters of small, white or pinkish urn shaped flowers that bloom March through June. Black berries follow the blooms and are enjoyed by a variety of wildlife.

Helenium autumnale

Helenium autumnale (Mountain Sneezeweed)

Fast growing native perennial grows 3 to 5 feet tall by 3 feet wide. Naturally occurring in wet meadows, marshes and stream banks, it prefers rich, moist soil and full sun. Can be somewhat drought tolerant but does best with even moisture. Yellow, daisy-like flowers bloom late summer to early fall. A great plant for use in borders, meadows and wild gardens. Attracts butterflies and bees and is supposedly deer and rabbit resistant.

Heuchera micrantha (Small Flowered Alumroot)

Shade loving perennial grows 1 foot tall with a 2 foot spike of very dainty creamy white flowers that contrast with reddish stalks. The 4-inch glossy green leaves are clump forming and grow 1 to 2 feet across. Happy plants can have tons of spikes of flowers at one time, making for quite a display.

Fast-growing deciduous shrub grows 5 to 7 feet tall, but can grow to 12 feet at maturity. Prefers partial shade and some summer water. Fragrant, cream-colored cascading flower clusters bloom in the summer, giving rise to the plants common name.

Beautiful native iris with grass-like foliage. Grows 6 to 12 inches tall and 10 to 12 inches wide in spreading clumps preferring sun to part shade. Blue/lavender, and at times, almost white flowers bloom in late spring.

Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead' (Munstead Lavender)

Compact lavender only growing to about 18 inches and has very aromatic blue green leaves. Tightly held flowers, about 8 to 12 inches in length, bloom profusely in spring, earlier than other lavender varieties. Makes a great hedge or border due to its short size.

Native lily growing 5 to 6 feet tall. Grows best in full sun to part shade. Golden orange flowers bloom June to July. Prefers well-drained soil, and tolerates summer drought.

Lilium pardalinum

Lilium pardalinum (Leopard Lily)

Tall-growing native lily found in damp areas in the coastal ranges of California and Oregon. Does not mind wet conditions and does well in Pacific NW winters. Can reach about 7 feet tall when happy. It produces stems of apple-green whorled foliage, topped off by up to 20 flowers per stem that usually bloom in July. Flowers are red-orange fading to a yellow-orange center, with numerous maroon spots.

Native lily with tall flower stems that can reach up to 6 feet tall. Will produce several scented yellow trumpet shaped flowers per stem with vivid brown anthers and sometimes maroon speckles inside. Prefers sun to part sun and rich moist soil.

Lonicera ciliosa

Lonicera ciliosa (Orange Trumpet Honeysuckle)

Deciduous vine found on the edges of dry coniferous forests. Climbs 15 to 20 feet. Prefers open shade-part sun. Showy orange to scarlet flowers bloom spring to early summer, but are not fragrant, and are almost exclusively pollinated by the Rufous Hummingbird. The fruit is a translucent orange-red berry.

Lonicera hispidula

Lonicera hispidula (Hairy Honeysuckle)

Native climbing deciduous shrub found throughout most of California and up into Washington. Can handle full sun to shade, works well in clay soil and is also drought tolerant. Use as a bank filler or groundcover, or let climb into larger shrubs and trees. Pink and yellow fragrant flowers appear spring through early summer and attract hummingbirds. Red berries that follow are loved by the birds.

Lonicera involucrata (Black Twinberry)

A bushy, deciduous shrub that grows 6 to 8 feet tall by 8 to 10 feet wide. Often found growing next to water. Prefers moist soil and sun to part shade. Has bright mid-green leaves. Pairs of 1/2 inch long, yellow, tubular flowers, surrounded by large green bracts bloom late spring to summer and attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. They are followed by 1/4 inch glossy, black berries surrounded by showy red bracts.

Lupinus polyphyllus

Lupinus polyphyllus (Big-Leaf Lupine)

Native perennial from western North America commonly found along streams and creeks. Prefers moist habitats. Grows 3 to 4 feet tall and can grow in full sun to part shade. A tall spike of blue to violet flowers bloom June to July and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Also known to help fix nitrogen in the soil.
